Embracing December’s Black Moon: A Portal for Transformation

by | Dec 28, 2024 | Journal Prompts, Moon Journey

Standing on my terrace in Spain, watching the sun sink behind the hills, I feel the approaching energy of December’s second new moon. The starry sky always makes me wonder where home is. Of course, it’s in my heart and with my dogs, but there’s no harm in wondering what is beyond the stars.

My three elderly rescue dogs Marley, Angel and Tommy are all dotted around the house. Marley and Angle will arrange themselves around me, as they always do – both claiming a spot next to me on the sofa. Tommy never leaves the kitchen. It’s his safe space. As ever, they seem to sense the shifting energies even better than I do.

The Magic of December’s Black Moon

This upcoming new moon on December 30th is special – it’s what’s known as a Black Moon, the second new moon in a single month. As an emotional projector who’s learned to trust her intuition, I’ve discovered that the real wisdom comes from feeling into the energy rather than following prescribed rules.

My Spanish neighbors, who’ve lived by nature’s rhythms for generations, understand this instinctively. They don’t need complex explanations about lunar cycles – they feel it in their bones, using this ancient knowledge to guide their planting and predict weather patterns.

A Tale of Two Winters

The contrast between my current December experience and my memories of UK winters couldn’t be more striking. Gone are the grey, drizzly days where festive lights pierce through the gloom by mid-afternoon. Here in my small Spanish hamlet, winter days arrive with crystal-clear blue skies and an intensity that never ceases to amaze me.

While I occasionally miss the cozy feeling of gathering around a fireplace while rain patters against windows, there’s something magical about celebrating the season with doors and windows open to the mountain air. Celebrations here extend well into January with Three Kings Day, embracing a gentler, more extended season of joy.

Capricorn’s Grounding Influence

This Black Moon falls in Capricorn, bringing a practical wisdom to our spiritual pursuits. At 64, I’ve learned to appreciate this grounding energy. Whether it’s maintaining my gluten-free lifestyle (with the occasional treat – because life’s too short not to), taking daily walks with my dogs, or protecting my energy as an INFJ in a noisy world, it’s about creating structures that support rather than constrain.

The Wisdom of the Triple Goddess

Moving into our wise woman years isn’t about retiring from life – it’s about stepping fully into our power. After three relationships with narcissistic men and ten years of independent living, I’ve learned that true strength comes from embracing exactly who you are – wild child history, spiritual seeker present, and all.

A Bridge Between Years

Visualization: The Starlight Bridge

Find a quiet moment and make yourself comfortable. Take three deep breaths. Imagine standing on a bridge made of starlight. Behind you lies everything you’ve experienced – all the wisdom you’ve gathered, all the strength you’ve earned. Ahead of you, the bridge leads into a gentle dawn.

Feel the solidity beneath your feet even as starlight sparkles around you. This is the gift of this Black Moon in Capricorn – the ability to stand firmly in our truth while reaching for our dreams.

Journal Prompts for Reflection

  • Looking back over this year’s journey, what gifts did solitude bring?
  • How has my relationship with hope evolved over the years?
  • What traditions am I ready to release? What new ones would I like to create?
  • Where do I feel most authentically myself?
  • What does celebration mean to me now, compared to earlier chapters?

Creating Sacred Space

This is a beautiful time for ritual, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. A quiet moment, a candle, and an open heart are all you need. The hills here hold centuries of stories, and there’s something powerful about adding ours to their keeping.

Embracing Hope’s Light

As this Black Moon ushers us from one year into the next, remember that hope isn’t about blind optimism. It’s about knowing our own strength while remaining open to magic. It’s about understanding that our timing is our own – whether in love, purpose, or discovering new parts of ourselves.

Moving Forward With Purpose

The Spanish landscape has taught me that beauty persists even in seemingly barren seasons. My dogs demonstrate daily that joy doesn’t diminish with age. And this Black Moon reminds us that endings are just transitions, moments of pause before we begin again.
