From Lost to Found: Reinvention at 50+

by | Nov 14, 2024 | Reinvent Yourself

Has life left you feeling a bit lost lately? Perhaps you’re standing at a crossroads, tea in hand, wondering how you’ve arrived at this peculiar junction with reinvention far from your thoughts. Take heart — sit comfortably, drunk your favourite biscuit, and review this guide, which I hope will help you navigate the path from feeling adrift to discovering a renewed sense of purpose and joy.

When You Find Yourself at the Crossroads

It often begins quietly, doesn’t it? Perhaps while folding the washing or gazing out at your garden. That subtle whisper that something isn’t quite aligned. Your life might look perfectly lovely on paper—a comfortable home, established career, grown children—yet something deep within yearns for more.

This feeling isn’t a sign that you’ve gone wrong; rather, it’s an invitation to explore what’s next. Like the first snowdrop pushing through frozen ground, it’s a signal that new growth is ready to emerge.

Recognising the Need for Change

The awareness that change is needed often arrives in subtle ways:

  • A persistent feeling of restlessness
  • Discovering that old routines no longer bring satisfaction. In fact, everything seems dull as ditch water
  • Finding yourself drawn to new ideas or possibilities, but not feeling like you can follow the call
  • Feeling out of step with your current life
  • Experiencing unexpected tears at ordinary beauty

These signs aren’t cause for alarm—they’re actually quite natural, particularly for women in their 50s and beyond. Think of them as your inner wisdom beginning to stir, like a dear friend gently tapping you on the shoulde or booting you up the bum to do something. If only you could…

The Sacred Art of Listening

Before rushing into action (as we’re often tempted to do), there’s immense value in pausing to listen. This is what I call “sitting in the void”—that quiet space between what was and what will be.

Just so you know, I used to be a rusher. I simply couldn’t pause, but then I found myself in a particularly horrible space and I knew I had to stop, get off social media and come into my heart.

Consider creating a simple morning ritual:

  • A quiet cup of tea before the day begins
  • A few moments of journaling
  • A gentle walk in nature (with my three dogs)
  • Five minutes of sitting in silence

These practices help you tune into your inner knowing, that wise voice that’s been waiting patiently to be heard.

Making Conscious Changes

As clarity begins to emerge, you can start making small, intentional shifts. There’s no need for dramatic gestures or grand announcements. Instead, think of it as gradually turning the wheel of a ship—small adjustments that, over time, lead to a new destination.

Start with gentle questions:

  • What small change would bring me joy today? E.g. sitting in the kitchen and just being
  • Which activities make me lose track of time?
  • What did I love doing before life became so serious?
  • Where do I feel most alive?

Let your answers guide your next steps, trusting that small actions can lead to meaningful transformation. Ok, I get that trying to get to these answers needs you to clear away years of conditioning and for me, let’s call it abusive put down behaviour from others.

Crossing the Chasm

Eventually, you’ll reach what feels like a gap between your current life and the one calling to you. This is where many women pause, feeling uncertain about taking that next step. Remember, you don’t need to leap across in one bound.

Instead, consider:

  • Taking one small risk each week
  • Trying something new, even if it feels slightly uncomfortable
  • Sharing your journey with a trusted friend
  • Celebrating each step forward, no matter how modest – this is vital!

Think of it as building a bridge, one plank at a time, rather than attempting to jump across the gaping chasm.

Creating Your Beautiful Life

As you continue this journey, you’ll begin to notice a shift. Like watching a garden come into bloom, new possibilities start to unfold. This is the time to nurture what’s emerging while remaining gentle with yourself. And I do mean be gentle, this is a time of kindness and self compassion. Trust me I know.

Consider these questions:

  • What brings me genuine joy?
  • How can I incorporate more of these elements into my daily life?
  • What would my ideal day look like?
  • What small changes could move me closer to this vision?

Practical Tools for Your Journey

Journaling

This is my go to before bed. I’ve journaled for years and it’s been a life saver. Don’t worry about grammar or making sense—just let your thoughts flow onto the paper. This practice often reveals insights and clarity you didn’t know you had.

Morning Pages

Start each day with two to three pages of free writing. This is not my fave but loads of people swear by it so give it a go.

The Joy List

Keep a running list of things that light you up, no matter how small:

  • The way morning light falls across your kitchen table
  • The way my old rescue dog Tommy greets me in the morning
  • A favourite piece of music
  • A walk in nature with the dogs

Refer to this list often and find ways to weave these elements into your daily life.

Weekly Check-ins

Set aside time each Sunday evening to reflect:

  • What brought me joy this week?
  • What felt challenging?
  • What am I learning about myself?
  • What would I like to explore next week?

Do a dump and declutter and get it all out.

When the Path Feels Foggy

There will be days when clarity seems elusive, when you question whether you’re moving in the right direction. This is perfectly normal. Like the British weather, some days will be clearer than others. I live in Spain and I am so glad not to see the delights of fog.

During these times:

  • Return to your morning ritual
  • Reread your journal entries
  • Connect with nature
  • Be extra gentle with yourself
  • Trust that clarity will return, just as the sun eventually breaks through the clouds

Creating Support Systems

While this journey is personal, you needn’t walk it alone. Consider:

  • Finding a walking partner who understands your journey. I used to walk with my friend Ange almost every evening when I lived in the UK
  • Joining a women’s circle or book club. For me I joined a spiritual development circle
  • Starting a journal club with like-minded friends
  • Connecting with others who are also exploring new chapters in their lives
  • Join The Inner Compass program

Embracing Your Emerging Story

As you continue this journey of reinvention, remember that you’re not starting from scratch—you’re building upon a lifetime of wisdom and experience. Every challenge you’ve faced, every role you’ve played, has contributed to who you are becoming.

Your reinvention doesn’t need to be dramatic or visible to others. The most meaningful changes often happen quietly, like seeds germinating beneath the soil. What matters is that the changes feel authentic and aligned with your inner wisdom.

Looking Ahead with Gentle Eyes

As you move forward, remember:

  • There’s no timeline for transformation
  • Small steps are just as valuable as big leaps
  • Your journey is uniquely yours
  • It’s never too late to begin again
  • Your inner wisdom will guide you true

A Closing Thought

Think of this time as autumn moving into winter and then spring—a natural cycle of letting go, resting, and rebirth. Just as nature knows when to shed leaves and when to bloom, trust that your inner wisdom knows the perfect timing for your transformation.

You haven’t lost your way; you’re simply being called to a new path. And with each step you take—whether it’s starting a morning journal practice, joining a new group, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of tea—you’re moving closer to the life that’s waiting to bloom.

Remember, this journey isn’t about becoming someone new—it’s about uncovering who you’ve always been, beneath the layers of shoulds and expectations. Like a garden coming back to life after winter, your reinvention is a natural process of growth and renewal.

Take that first small step today, knowing that you carry within you all the wisdom and courage you need for this journey of reinvention. Your beautiful new chapter is waiting to unfold.

Let your journal be a mirror reflecting your true self, unfiltered and raw, capturing the essence of your journey through life.
