Where do I even start?

Dale Darley

The where do I even start is a question I have heard so many times.

Someone – you – knows they have a story worth telling, and they can feel the weight of it sitting in their heart or belly, yet every time they open a blank document the whole of their life tries to climb onto the page at once – childhood, marriages, the job they hated, the dog that saved them, the year everything fell apart – and they close the laptop and go and make a cup of tea instead.

I know. I have drunk a lot of that tea myself.

A memoir is rarely written in one heroic sitting. It is gathered, piece by piece, like wildflowers on a long walk. A memory here. A person there. A place that still smells of something you can’t quite put a name to. Left loose, those pieces scatter. Gathered with care, they begin to show you the shape of your story.

That is why I created the Memoir Journals.

Each journal takes one part of your life and walks you through it slowly, with prompts that go deeper than ‘write about your childhood’.

The idea is that you notice, you remember, you reflect, and before you know it you have pages and pages of raw material – scenes, characters, places, turning points and the meaning threaded through them all. So when you come to write your memoir, you’re not starting from nothing. You’re starting from you.

Uncover Your Stories – One Prompt At A Time

Is this you?

You’ve been saying that you would write a memoir for years, but…

You have tried, got as far as pass the parcel on your fifth birthday and stopped. Or any number of reasons why not.

How the journals work

Every prompt in every journal moves through the same four steps.

Moment – Memory – Meaning – Wisdom

Which Memoir

Every life is a part of a wild garden

I’m inspired by wildflowers, so each journal is also inspired by a wildflower – daisy, poppy, forget-me-not, cow parsley and cornflower.

The Journals

The Memoir Arc

Memoir Journals

Oxeye Daisy – wholeness, seeing the bigger picture · [Available soon on Amazon]

A single daisy is lovely. A field of daisies tells a story.

This is the journal to start with as it takes you from who you were to who you are now.

You’ll travel through seven stages – the world before, the first stirring, the resistance, crossing the line, the messy middle, the realisation and the return – and come out the other side with a rough outline for your memoir.

You’ll write about: who you were before everything changed, the moment there was no going back, what you were pretending not to notice, and who you are now.

Places That Remember Me

Places That Remember Me

Poppy – memory, place, echoes of the past · [Coming soon]

Poppy seeds can lie in the soil for decades, waiting, until the conditions are right – then a poppy that hasn’t seen a poppy in living memory is alight with beauty and colour.

Places hold our memories the same way. The lane you walked as a child. The kitchen where the stories were told. The bench where you made the decision that changed everything.

You’ll write about: the homes, landscapes, rooms and roads that shaped you, and the parts of yourself you left behind in them.

Memoir Moments

Forget-Me-Not – memory, remembrance, connection · [Coming soon]

Some memories arrive with a massive bang. Others sit quietly in the corners of your life, waiting to be noticed. A voice, a scent, a photograph, a walk, a conversation.

This journal is an invitation to gather those small moments together, because they so often carry the biggest meaning.

You’ll write about: the tiny, vivid scenes that keep coming back to you, and why they refuse to let go.

Characters From My Life

Characters From My Life · Wild Rose

Wild Rose – relationships, love, growth, complexity · [Coming soon]

The people who shape us are rarely perfect – just like us. They love us, challenge us, frustrate us, inspire us and change us.

Like the wild rose, relationships have blooms and thorns, and both belong to the story.

You’ll write about: the family, friends, lovers, teachers and adversaries who walked through your life – and the version of you each one brought out.

The Wisdom Years

The Wisdom Years

Cow Parsley Seed Heads – legacy, maturity, passing on knowledge · [Coming soon]

Every flower blooms. Every flower eventually turns to seed. The Wisdom Years isn’t about endings; it’s about what remains – the experiences you’ve gathered, the lessons you’ve learned the hard way and the gifts you’re ready to pass on.

You’ll write about: what life has taught you, what you’d tell your younger self, and the seeds you want to leave for those who come after you.

Letters I’ll Never Send

Letters I'll Never Send · Cornflower

Cornflower – truth, honesty, things left unsaid · [Coming soon]

Some conversations happen only in our hearts. Words of gratitude. Apologies. Questions. Goodbyes.

The cornflower stands for the courage to speak honestly, even when the person you’re writing to may never read a word.

You’ll write about: the things you wish you’d said, the things you wish they’d said, and what finally putting them on paper sets free.

FAQ’S

Do I need to be a writer to use these?

Not at all. If you can remember something and hold a pen, you’re qualified. The prompts do the heavy lifting; you just turn up and tell the truth.

Which journal should I start with?

The Memoir Arc gives you the big picture and a rough outline, so it’s a lovely first step. That said, if a particular flower is tugging at your heart, follow it.

What if I don’t want to write a whole memoir?

Then don’t. Plenty of people use the journals to make sense of their lives, to leave stories for their family, or simply because it feels good to remember. Nothing is wasted.

Will these help me write a book for my business?

Yes. Your story is what makes people trust you, and these journals help you find the moments, characters and lessons that make it land.

When you’re ready to shape it into a book, The Memoir Planner Or Guide are waiting for you.

What if a prompt brings up something painful?

It might. Be kind to yourself, skip it, and come back when you’re ready. Your wild self knows what you can handle.

Where can I buy them?
